Gatley Green Proposals
Following a consultation letter from Stockport Council to businesses and residents in the Gatley Green area, an informal meeting was organised by Gatley Village Business and Traders Association (GVBTA) on 22 November. The meeting was held at Mathers Bakery, attended by 2 Council Officers together with 25 Business Owners and Residents.
One of the major concerns of residents has been vehicles driving the wrong way along Gatley Green from Mathers Bakery.
The Council's proposals for Gatley Green being consulted upon include:
Closing off the road cut through by the War Memorial
Making Birch Road one way from Church Road to St James Church
Requiring all traffic from Acres Road/Birch Road to go along Gatley Green to access Church Road
Introducing Residents’ Parking Permits
Providing for road parking on the “house” side of Gatley Green
Create more paving areas by Mathers Bakery to discourage vehicles from going down the Gatley Green the wrong way;
Reducing the number of available parking spaces available by at least 8 spaces
Much discussion related to how road users impact upon the immediate locality. The view of the meeting was to retain the “Status Quo” in relation to the parking and road arrangements, specifically to retain the road that currently divides the War Memorial with the main part of Gatley Green itself.
The meeting concluded that:
Road markings should be improved where the cut through by the War Memorial joins Gatley Green
Introduction of speed bumps on Gatley Green should be considered
Retention of as much on street parking as possible
The proposals to create more paving by Mathers Bakery should be re-visited, with the view to ensuring delivery vehicles have good access to the Gatley Green shops
Signage and road markings by Mathers Bakery be improved to ensure vehicle users do not go past the “No Entry” signs andalong Gatley Green
Introduce a traffic camera to identify vehicles going the wrong way through Gatley Green
Improvements to the paving in and around Gatley Green will be welcomed
Whilst not an exhaustive summary of all the issues raised, the residents and business owners were pleased to note that the Council Officers welcomed the positive feedback being given.
It is important, however, for residents and business owners to submit their comments to Stockport Council so that their comments are formally noted as part of the consultation process. The closing date for written/emailed comments is 5 December 2011.
It was very encouraging that such a meeting was held and was so well attended, demostrating the feelings and concerns of local residents and businesses.
