A Gatley resident is in the process o...
First of all it's nice to see the Curtain Agency opening on the corner of Elm Road - they just need to update their address on this website! Also, good to see the positive reports on the new coffee shop - will give it a try this week now that the sandwiches are available.
On a minus point, sorry to see one of the local fish-and-chips shops increasing their prices from today by between 7 and 10% and blaming it on the 2.5% VAT increase. Some of us can add up!! They would have been better just saying that due to rising costs their new prices would be......
Haha, Robert. Could spend all day doing that! Walked along that stretch of shops this morning and the pavements and gutters were full, looked a real mess. I guess that whilst the roadworks are on the cleaners are staying out of the way.
re: Digger. Agreed, but, why, if it means so much to you, did you not pick it up ?... 'dig it' ?!
The initial blame is on the person who discarded it, totally agree. From thereon I have a view that the supplier, who has made money out of that sale and the people of Gatley, also has a moral responsibility to keep their piece of pavement clean. The fact that they probably stepped over the rubbish I really find amazing.
I agree that the Takeaway has some responsibility but don't forget the purchaser who ate the pizza and discarded the box also has a responsibility.
Blame should be shared.
Yet again I question the interests of some of our shopkeepers. Last night, around 7pm, I walked past Soprano's and on the pavement outside their door lay a discarded large pizza box, right under their window. This morning at 9am I was amazed to see it still there.
The Soprano's staff must have locked up last night and stepped over it as they walked away, despite there being a public litter bin 20 or so feet away. It had obviously been issued by them but I guess they view it as not their problem once the goods are handed over.
Do these people take no pride in the service they deliver, 'cos they certainly have no pride in Gatley?
I see the new hair salon (next to Piccolo) is now open.
That gives us ten hair places if I've done my sums right.
I don't think so Digger, they just have to get change of use to a takeaway/food business, and then it can be any takeaway.
But does a takeaway not have to specify it's product? The application was for a chicken place, and now it's an indian.
We do seem to have a lot of a small number of types of businesses - restaurants/takeaways, hair/beauty, opportunities to buy greetings cards. They must all do reasonably well as they don't seem to go out of business and new ones keep opening. The old rule of supply and demand, I guess.
Yes, I agree, we don't need another. I think that Stockport council blocked it but it went to appeal (to an institution in Bristol I think), and they overturned the council's decision. These days, with internet ordering, maybe these businesses don't need such a local clientele to survive, but it's not good for Gatley village IMHO.
I see from the sign on the counter in the old Barnardos that the revamped shop is definitely going to another indian takeaway. So much for the Dixi chicken application. I never saw anything about a change.
So that makes 3 indian restaurants (which also provide takeaways) as well as 4 dedicated take-aways when the new one opens. Still, a bit of a way to go till we catch up with Rusholme.
Takeaway or restaurant? I guess it's irrelevant really, we didn't need another. So yet again planners and the council don't seem to take their tax-payers views into account.
Sign in the door says it's a new Indian. Much as I like Indian food we have enough already....
I also think that. The local planners and councillors know their own towns and what they want and will sustain. For a planning request so small I can't understand why they go against the local knowledge.
I am all for a wider variety of food outlets,. A noodle type place like fuzion in fallowfield, or rice in town would be amazing (I still have not worked out wehere the best local chinese is yet). Or a good casual dining space.
But yes, I think we have plenty of fried chicken on offer.
Still can't get my head round the fact that an appeal can be heard on a matter not related to the town it is heard in. Another food outlet just depresses me.
Yes, spot on, what village needs 2 fried chicken joints?
At least we are lucky enough to have the ones you mention...
This 'town' may not be big enough for the two of them, but... our belly is !
That said, enough of these takeaways, if we must have foodie outlets let them be quality - Armenique, Coffee Fix, Piccolo (now ?)...
Dixie chicken, pah!
The only good thing to be called dixie chicken is a song by Little Feat

Looks like the chicken wars will begin, Dixie V Alaska. This town ain't big enough for the two of them!
They were... i think the appeals place is in Bristol and they were overruled.
If so, not impressed. Yet another take-away and more rubbish in the village. I thought even our councillors were against that but perhaps not, or they couldn't stop it.
I think it went to appeal in Bristol and got passed....
I thought that the Dixie thing wasn't approved?
I assume the activity at Barnardos will be the Dixie Chicken Takeaway - lots of rumours about the old Corner Gallery - the new Corner Gallery is around the corner in Buxton Street.
So, activity in the old Barnado's shop and the one that was the art shop near Piccolo's. Anyone know anything?
I bought the odd bunch on my Sat mornings but the choice was getting less and less until on the last occasion a couple of months ago she had nothing in. I thought that's odd and wondered if problems were starting. A crying shame as she was an excellent florist. The annoying thing is the Co-ops and other shops selling cheap bunches of (often) time-expired garbage probably ate into her market.
Regarding the Florists, sad to see it be no more. Confession - oneself never bought any ! - never plucked-up the courage to ask the lassie if she was 'spoken for' !
Confirmed to me that this has now closed. Sad that we no longer have a specialist florist. the lady who ran that one did some greats arrangements but seemed to struggle with stock for the day-to-day bunches of flowers at the end.
See the carpet shop is open though - good news.
Has the flower shop now gone? The shutters have been down for a few days including last Saturday.
Just wanted to say a GREAT BIG THANK YOU to Lisa and Sue at Me Time for making sure my hair stayed perfect throughout the day and for fitting in the extra manicure on what was already a busy Sunday for you both. I am sure you will be a great bonus to the village.
